iPad test

Did this on my iPad as a test.  I think if I can get used to the stylus, I might do that more often.  Certainly saves paper...

Oh....hey there, blog.

Here are a few quick sketches to get back into the swing of things.  It's been busy, lately...

hopefully not the last one until September

Woke up early this morning and did some sketching.  Finished it off with a brush pen.  I need to buy an actual good one sometime soon.

faces

Some more warm up sketches.  This time working on expressions.  What are these a warm up to, you might ask?  I'm wondering the same thing myself.

Cap

Saw Captain America over the weekend.  Great stuff.  Definitely one of the best Marvel Studio films (if not the best one).  Felt like an old-fashioned adventure movie.  Which is refreshing, actually.  Not an ounce of cynicism to be found.  Glad to see it's doing well, too.  Here's hoping we get more WWII-era Cap adventures in the future.

Highlights:

  • Hugo Weaving's accent
  • "Why, fondue is nothing but hot cheese and bread!"
  • Cap destroys a GIGANTIC tank.
  • "I had a date."

Anyway, here's the ole' standby warm-up sketch.  Or at least some version of it.

some inks

That top one is brush pen over pencils, and the bottom one is just doodling around with the brush pen without any pencils.

two more

No clue what that top one is supposed to be.  A cat?  A squirrel?  I think mostly a squirrel.  Second pic is an old one that I recently found and still like.

belfast

I was in Belfast yesterday and today.  Super nice day today, so I did some quick sketches of Belfast Harbor. Hopefully I'll be posting more regularly soon.

"Ha-HA!!"

I was a pretty big fan of Zorro when I was a kid.  Had the cape.  Had the mask.  This didn't start out as a Zorro pic, but once I sketched in the smile I was pretty sure that's where I was going with it.  None of that brooding hero shtick for him.  Anyway, this was done with pencils, and then a real brush and ink, and then colored in Photoshop.

several things

I'm pretty sure I haven't posted anything new all week.  Here's some stuff I did over the last few days.

Super 8

I saw JJ Abrams' Super 8 today.  It's quite fun -- has some problems toward the end, but it built up so much good will for most of its running time that they don't matter so much to me.  Maybe they'll become more glaring upon future viewings?

Either way, this movie has a ton of great stuff going for it.  Any scene involving the main character, Joe, and the girl he likes, Alice, is pure magic.  One scene in particular involving Alice trying to impress Joe with her zombie impression is probably my favorite scene in the whole movie and my favorite scene of the year so far.

I could have watched a whole movie of these kids just making a movie without anything weird happening.

passing the time

Little hold on the pen-sketches.  Here are two I did while passing the time on a ferry to an island a few days ago.
