penguin

Here's a quick one I did with a brush pen and some colors in Photoshop.

minimal

One of the big trends right now in the online world is the minimalistic movie poster.  They usually use a small range of colors and key images from the film and look like something you'd actually want to put on your wall.  So I thought I'd try it with one of my favorite movies ever: The Iron Giant.

I like the idea of this more than the execution, but it was fun to experiment with.  If I'd spent more than four minutes on that hand, I'd probably like it more.

Goose Nova

A quick doodle of a cartoon goose wearing a space helmet drawn in the corner of my work planner today.  Very high brow stuff going on here...

Big Blue

I really need to work on color correcting in Photoshop from a Mac to a PC.  The background on this should be yellow, and I'm pretty sure that's not showing up at all.  Need to learn more about how to make colors stay the same when transferring from one computer to another.

Anyway, here's Superman.

Rabbit, Dog, and Fish, Attorneys at Law

It's been a few days since the last post -- very busy!  So here's some cartoon animals.

another snow day

Even more snow today.  I don't think this one is as good as the other snow-themed one -- still trying to figure out the coloring thing.  I think a lot of it has to do with there not being some bold colors in there to focus on.

Anyway, I pictured this one being the flip view of the first snow day.

Edit: Yikes, that was almost pure white.  Made some adjustments so it wasn't so washed out.

a monster and a bird

Drawing Mike Wazowski is fun.  Mostly because he's probably the easiest Pixar character to draw.  The bird doesn't have any wings, apparently, but I like how simple it looks.

tire swing

Here's this.  Tried coloring it, but didn't like how it was turning out so decided to just stick with the original pencils.  I like the idea of it, so I'll probably try to clean it up a little bit and color it again.  But not right now.

Here's a brush pen sketch of one Richie Tenenbaum and then a doodle of a strong cat.

The Margins #2

Another one from the margins, and some sort of blacksmith?  They were both done in pen.  The second one I went over in brush pen.

Animation

About three or four years ago, I made a graphic novel called "Maxwell Blink and the Disasterous Device!".  I wanted to do it just to see if I could do it, and also to force me to get better at drawing.  Looking back at it now, I still like the story, still like the dialogue, still like the characters, and the less said about the art the better.

So yesterday my good buddy Josh (photographer extraordinaire; animation scientist) of Studio 28 Media revealed to the world an animation he did of a big chase sequence from the story.  He'd shown me a total of about 4 seconds of it the past year or so, and for all I knew that was all he had.

What he actually had was a minute and eleven seconds of a full sequence from the graphic novel: colored, animated, and awesome.  There is no sound or music, so listen to something great while you're watching it.  Or just imagine lots of roars and tire squeals, crashes, booms, and yelling.

I'll post the video on here at some point, but for now you can head on over to his studio website to read his blog and watch it.  And if you know anybody in the Indiana area who is looking for the services of a talented photographer, send them his way.

Thumbs up, sir.

yo-yo

This is actually an old one (done over Christmas), but I put a little color in it.

Cowboy

Here's a late night sketch from last night.  He's got a Sam Elliott look about him, which is totally on purpose and not incidental at all....

I'm trying to get better at coloring in Photoshop, even if it is just working with flat colors for now.  I don't have a cintiq or tablet or anything right now to do anything that would allow me to color more naturally.

Dogs and Birds

The first two pictures I did this morning.  I like the idea of the Spider-Man picture, but it's sort of crap.  These could be better, let's face it.

A sketch and some color.

So here's a quick sketch and a little dude who looks to be some sort of hazmat suit.  The top one is some 3/4 view practice.  The bottom pic is probably heavily inspired from the hazmat suit characters from Monsters Inc.  I think I'll be caught up if I post two more pictures tomorrow.

The Margins

Three pics from the margins.  I think the monsterish guy at the bottom should show up in something, but not sure what.  Also, apparently I like to give big ears to the cartoons I draw.  Good to know.

The Year of 365 Scribbles Project #1

Last year one of my goals was to get better at drawing, to the point where I wasn't embarrassed to draw in public. I did that by drawing in public a lot and being very embarrassed most of the time.

So now I'm gonna try to take it a step further and put my scribbles on the internet, where crazy strangers can see everything.

So the goal is to post one picture a day. Or at least a couple pictures per post. Whatever adds up to 365 pictures for 2011. Yes, this means I have some catching up to do.

Most of what I post will probably just be pencil sketches, or pen sketches I scribble in the margins of legal pads. I might throw in some comic strips and pictures from various personal projects I'm trying to finish.

Let's start the year off right with some Ron Burgundy.
